City of Jeffers - City Council Meeting

The Jeffers City Council met in REGULAR session on January 22, 2024, at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Present: Mayor Brad Prins, Council members: Curt Determan, Sheila Ryker, Shawna Dorr-Jones, Michael Schoper, Sharen Goeman, Clerk. Absent: Lance Holmen, Maintenance.

Mayor Prins called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Minutes from the December 11, 2023, meeting was approved as read.

The council reviewed City Offices. Motion Ryker second Determan, unanimous vote to keep the city offices the same.

The City of Jeffers DOES NOT WAIVE Monetary Limits on municipal tort liability established by the Minnesota Statutes, Section 466.04 to the extent of the limits of the liability coverage obtained from the LMCIT.

Adopted: Dorr-Jones Seconded: Determan Unanimous vote.

Resolution setting fees and charges for 2024

Adopted: Schoper Seconded: Dorr-Jones Unanimous vote.
The council discussed the city animal control position. Motion Determan, second Schoper, unanimous vote due to the resignation of Sandy Olson, the council will hold off on hiring a new person to fill the vacancy at this time.

A letter will be sent to a business regarding unlicensed vehicles parked outside.
 
A special meeting has been set for Monday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the purchase of a fire truck and building a new fire hall, including economic and environmental impacts, service area, alternatives to the projects, and the potential funding sources, including USDA Rural Development. All residents and property owners within the City of Jeffers and the Jeffers Fire Department service area are encouraged to attend. A formal notice will be published in the Citizen and the Lamberton News.

The Jeffers Fire Department planning committee will meet with Angie Boersma, architect, on Thursday, February 8 at 2 p.m. at City Hall.

Chickens were discussed by the council and due to the city ordinance, which states no farm animals within city limits. A letter will be sent to a resident regarding chickens.

Motion Dorr-Jones, second Ryker, unanimous vote to approve the USDA Rural Development Legal Services Agreement between Ron Schramel and the City of Jeffers for the grant application.

Motion Determan, second Schoper, unanimous vote approving the building permit for Gee Lewis. Motion Dorr-Jones, second Determan, unanimous vote to pay the bills and approve the financial report.
